Recession Pop Is Back

Charli XCX. Sabrina Carpenter. Tate McRae. Chappell Roan. And so many more are bringing pop back to life. Are we returning to a golden age of pop? One might wonder. But does that come with a price? We might not be going through a recession but it seems we need an escape from reality. Could this be the comeback of recession pop? What is driving it this time?

For those of you that don't know what recession pop is, it's a type of upbeat pop music that gained popularity during the 2008 recession. Much of the content pertained to partying. Notable songs include "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga and "Don't Stop The Music" by Rihanna. It was an escape from the hard realities of the 2008 recession. A perfectly accessible escape.

Recession pop may be back but not because we are entering a recession. Today, this music provides us an escape from the harsh realities of 2025. With Trump back in the Oval Office, a lot of our lives got worse. It's just a fact. He has stripped back years of progress on all fronts. And he isn't prepared to stop. Why wouldn't we need an escape from this messed up world? And what an easier escape than music. Safe to say recession pop is officially back.
